Chapter Nine

Six o’clock finally arrived and Joe grabbed his overnight bag and walked out of his room. His mom was downstairs making dinner. He stopped off to say goodnight and that he’d see her in the morning.

“Mom, I’m off.” He came up behind her and kissed her cheek. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” He turned to walk away.

“Joe.”

He stopped and turned back to his mother. “Yeah.”

“Is everything okay? I mean I know you’re happy. I can see that on your face, but is everything okay?” Concern creased her brow.

“Of course I am. Why would you ask that?”

“I might be your mother, but I’m not stupid. I know you’re dating someone, and it’s just not like you to keep things from your father and I. I just want to know that whatever it is you are doing isn’t going to get you hurt.” She held Joe’s gaze as she waited for him to answer.

“Mom, it’s just something new for both of us. I do really like him, and I think he feels the same.” Joe shrugged his shoulders. “I just want to give it time to see if it works out before I go introducing him to you and dad.” Joe gave her a warm smile. “But I swear to you I’m not involved in anything illegal if that’s what you’re asking.”

His mom started to laugh and swatted at him with her dishtowel. “Mister funny man. You just be careful.”

Joe said good-bye and hopped into his car. He drove the five minutes it took to get to Jackson’s house but it felt like an hour. He hit every stoplight on the way. His pulse spiked the closer he got to Jackson’s. He’d taken to parking his car in the garage so no one would see his car in the street.

Yeah, that bothered him because he was condoning Jackson’s phobia of coming out. But in the end he told himself it was okay. Jackson would eventually get used to the idea of others knowing he and Joe were an item.

Once he had his car parked in the detached garage, he hit the door opener and the panel wood door fell back into place. Joe tossed his overnight bag over his shoulder and took the steps up to the back door of Jackson’s house. He opened the door and could hear Jackson walking around in his bedroom.

Joe started down the hallway and stood captivated by the man walking around with a towel hung low around his waist singing the Frank Sinatra song “The Way You Look Tonight.”

Jackson had yet to notice him and started to sway his hips as he sung. Out of nowhere, he started to move his feet dancing with an imaginary partner. Joe was mesmerized by the graceful moves Jackson showcased. Never in his life would he have suspected Jackson to be a dancer. Joe caught himself bobbing his head to the smooth, easy tone of Jackson’s voice. Jackson began to hum and spin around, and he let out a yelp of surprise when he finally noticed Joe standing in the entry to his room.
